Drinking also lowers the imbiber's sense of inhibitions, which can make drinking feel freeing and relaxing. For persons who struggle with intimacy this can make alcohol a crutch to get through the day. Long-term problems associated with alcohol abuse include impaired functioning at work and school, as well as physical complications such as heart disease, damage to the liver, high blood pressure, gout, dementia, and early death from drunken driving or poor judgment when inebriated (Freedman 2013).
